The handcrafted wooden figurines known as “smoke puppets” from Germany’s Erzgebirge region are symbols of local cultural heritage, especially during winter. When a cone made of ashes, sandalwood, and frankincense is lit inside, these figurines release fragrant smoke. Traditional designs typically feature foresters, miners, and nightwatchers. The craft, which dates back to 1830, uses locally sourced wood and involves meticulous hand-painting and assembly.
In the last decade, declining interest from younger generations has posed challenges for artisans and resellers trying to keep this cherished craft alive. The project mul’m aims to preserve this tradition through a new approach. It draws inspiration from the iconic shapes of the puppets, simplifying elements while maintaining their essence.
The aim of mul’m is not only to revitalize this time-honored craftsmanship but also to ensure its iconic scent for generations to come.
